Hardwood vs. Softwood

Ohio is home to a variety of trees, with over 100 different species growing natively in the state. We source our wood from local distributors, meaning you will see familiar woods in many of our designs. Oftentimes, clients will choose a board based on the color of the wood, matching it to the aesthetic or design of their home. It is also important to make sure that the product you are purchasing is made from a wood that is intended for your specific use.

Cutting boards, for example, must be able to withstand repetitive cuts, made while preparing food. Hardwoods are best suited for this purpose. You will often see hardwoods used in flooring and furniture as they are naturally very strong and dense. Examples of hardwoods that we use frequently here at Rockcliff Design are: Maple, Walnut, and Cherry.

Softwoods are lighter in weight and grow faster, making them renewable as they are more quickly reproduced back into the environment than hardwoods. Softwoods are often used for building components such as molding, doors, and windows. Examples of softwoods that we incorporate into pieces here at Rockcliff Design are: Pine and Cedar.
