This post dives into our experience assembling the 5'x5' Avid CNC, including key upgrades chosen to maximize its future potential. When we moved into our new shop in 2020, we knew we wanted to dedicate space to a CNC machine. We chose several upgrades/features to future-proof our machine:

So, the day finally arrived, and the machine was delivered to our door step. But before we dove into the world of computerized cutting, there was one crucial step: assembly. The machine and frame arrived in 17 packages, ready to be unboxed. Assembling an Avid CNC might seem intimidating, but our experience was seamless and worth the 20 hours of labor to complete.
We found the manual to have clear and concise instructions. The well-organized guide breaks down the process into manageable steps, ensuring a smooth and efficient build.
Pro Tip: Read Ahead! While the instructions are straightforward, taking a moment to glance at the next step can be a valuable timesaver. There will be instances where understanding the upcoming task will streamline the current one. For example, understanding the spacing of the cross braces before setting the first one, avoided a future headache.

Points to Ponder: Considerations Before You Buy
Lightweight Construction: The extruded aluminum frame may cause slight wobbling during operation. Adding weight or implementing stiffening techniques can address this.
PC Dependency: An operational PC is required to run the machine.
DIY Assembly Commitment: Building from a kit involves numerous parts and can be daunting for some.
Learning Curve: Both CNC and CAD have a learning curve. Be prepared to invest time in mastering these skills.
Investment Considerations: While generally more affordable than some CNC options, the Avid Pro is still a significant investment.
Beyond the Basics: Addressing Minor Shortcomings
BYOD Dust Collection: Avid doesn't include a dust collection solution. You'll need to source one separately.
Missing Solutions: We had to find my own E-stop button solution and laptop mount.
Ethernet Connection: An ethernet port is required for connection.
Upgrade Potential: While Avid offers some upgrades, there are even more powerful options (like liquid-cooled spindles) not yet integrated into their product line.
Wall Mounting Limitations: Unlike some wall-mountable CNC machines that save floor space, the Avid's design isn't readily compatible with wall mounting.

The Avid CNC Pro is an exceptional machine for makers seeking a customizable and powerful CNC platform. The upgrade options allow you to tailor it to your specific needs, and the modular design makes it a great long-term investment. However, be prepared to dedicate time and effort to assembly and software learning. If you're a seasoned CNC user seeking absolute top-of-the-line features, some competitor options might be more suitable. But for price, customizability, and serious making potential, the Avid Pro is a compelling choice and the right fit for our shop.
